I comuni italiani: secoli XII-XIV

The book offers an interpretative synthesis of current research on the history of political and institutional developments of north Italy cities from the end of the eleventh in the early fourteenth century. Their relationships with the other powers (the papacy, the empire, the lordships) are investigated together with the institutional developments, social tensions and administrative developments in two hundred crucial years in Italian history. After tracing the characteristics which distinguish the Italian cities from those of the rest of Western Europe, the analysis is developed in three stages: The Birth of the city communes (1080-1190), the mayor's regime (1190-1250), “Popolo” and parties (1250-1330). This distinction light up the big changes and the developments of city society and institutions, while a constant focus is on two long term aspects which are the basic elements of the commune’s history: the need to found and justify the control over a countryside against other powers (bishops, papacy, empire, other cities, landlords); and the need to create and adapt rules of participation and governments which represented the different groups af the city and the balance of their respective force. A final chapter reports some considerations about the primary and secondary sources paying special attention to recent research.

Il libro offre una sintesi interpretativa delle attuali conoscenze sulle vicende politiche e civili delle città dell'Italia centro-settentrionale dalla fine dell'XI all'inizio del XIV secolo: le loro relazioni con gli altri poteri, il papato, l'impero, le signorie; gli sviluppi istituzionali, le tensioni sociali e le evoluzioni amministrative in duecento anni cruciali nella storia italiana. Dopo aver tracciato le caratteristiche che distinguono le città italiane da quelle della restante Europa occidentale, l'analisi è sviluppata in tre fasi: La nascita dei comuni (1080-1190); Il regime del podestà (1190-1250); "Popolo" e parti (1250-1330). Questa scansione cronologica illumina i grandi cambiamenti e le interconnessioni della società e delle istituzioni cittadine, mentre il filo conduttore dei tre capitoli è l'attenzione a due grandi temi, corrispondenti alle cause stesse del costituirsi del comune: il bisogno di fondare e giustificare il controllo su un territorio conteso con forze interne ed esterne alla città (i vescovi, l'impero, il papato, altre città, signorie laiche ed ecclesiastiche); l'esigenza di elaborare forme di partecipazione politica e sistemi di governo adatti alla pluralità di interessi dei cittadini. Un capitolo finale dà conto dell'approccio critico dell'autore alle fonti e agli studi usati, con particolare attenzione alla storiografia più recente.
