Introduzione a Mill

La monografia presenta il pensiero di John Stuart Mill nella varie dimensioni, filosofica, economica e politica seguendo sia il percorso cronologico delle opere sia la scansione tematica. Discute inoltre le linee principali della letteratura secondaria. Presenta anche una interpretazione del suo pensiero che collega tre assi teorici, l’utilitarismo, il liberalismo e il perfezionismo, con cui si intende la concezione valutativa dell’individuo umano come un essere progressivo. Discute in particolare i temi romantici sviluppati negli anni Trenta dell’Ottocento e l’importanza che essi annettono alla cultura interiore dell’individuo: il volume mostra come questi temi tornino riformulati nelle opere classiche degli anni Cinquanta come On Liberty e Utilitarianism oltre ad avere un ruolo cruciale nei trattati di logica e di economia politica degli anni Quaranta. The monograph introduces the thought of John Stuart Mill in the various areas, philosophy, political economy, political science. The book follows Mill’s biography and covers thematically the various topics he discusses. It also reviews the main interpretations offered. The book also advances an interpretation of Mill’s work which shows the collaboration of three lines: utilitarianism, liberalism and perfectionism by which the author means Mill’s evaluative notion of the individual as a progressive being. In this connection it discusses in particular the romantic issues characteristic of Mill’s writings in the 1830s and the importance they attach to the inner culture of the individual: the book shows how such issues come back revised in Mill’s classic works in the 1850s and 60s, such as On Liberty and Utilitarianism, as well as bearing an important connection to what Mill does in his treatises on logic and political economy from the 1840s.
