First monograph dedicated to Giusto de' Conti da Valmontone, known as the «Pietro Bembo del Quattrocento» (Santagata) for his role in the affirmation of the Petrarch model. The volume opens a large biographical profile, so far missing, of this attendant of Pope Eugene IV, promoted in the 40s Treasurer of the Pontifical Brand, and finally arrived at the service of the Rimini court as adviser to Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. The study then follows the literary path made by the author, from the conquest of his own style in the individual rhymes, to their "narrative" organization in the first real songbook following the Petrarchian one ("La bella mano", 1440). The most significant texts are therefore dedicated to specific readings, from which emerges also the author's ability to express a strong experimental vein: now by venturing into the young genres of elegy and vulgar ecloga, now resorting to equally innovative Neoplatonic references. Finally, the study illustrates the great fortune of the fifteenth century of Giusto's rhymes on the basis of numerous manuscripts and printed witnesses, of which it also presents the fundamental emblematic relations, in view of a an upcoming critical edition.
Prima monografia dedicata a Giusto de’ Conti da Valmontone, noto come il «Pietro Bembo del Quattrocento» (Santagata) per il ruolo svolto nell'affermazione del modello petrarchesco. Apre il volume un ampio profilo biografico, finora mancante, di questo cubicolario di papa Eugenio IV, promosso negli anni ’40 Tesoriere della Marca pontificia, e infine approdato al servizio della corte riminese come consigliere di Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. Lo studio segue poi il percorso letterario compiuto dall'autore, dalla conquista del proprio stile nelle singole rime, fino alla loro organizzazione “narrativa” nel primo vero canzoniere successivo a quello petrarchesco (“La bella mano”, 1440). Ai testi più significativi sono quindi dedicate specifiche letture, da cui emerge anche la capacità dell’autore di esprimere una forte vena sperimentale: ora cimentandosi nei giovani generi dell’elegia e dell’egloga volgare, ora ricorrendo a riferimenti neoplatonici altrettanto innovativi. Infine, si illustra la grande fortuna quattrocentesca delle rime contiane sulla base dei numerosi testimoni manoscritti e a stampa, di cui si presentano anche i fondamentali rapporti stemmatici, in vista di una edizione critica ormai vicina.
