Drawing on a wide international and interdisciplinary literature, the chapter examines the music genre “world music”, both as a social construction and as a repertoire of cultural artifacts used as resources for action. The relationship between these two aspects are investigated through the analysis of four relevant provinces: the representations and discourses about “world music” from the part of the music industry and cultural intermediaries; the economy guiding the global circulation and local re-appropriations of musical creativity enrolled in the “world music” genre; the activities of musicians in the peculiar contexts where some of such forms are shaped; the consumer experiences of music coming from – of influenced by - different cultures.
Attingendo a una vasta letteratura internazionale e interdisciplinare, il capitolo indaga il genere musicale “world music”, sia come costruzione sociale che come repertorio di artefatti impiegati come risorsa per l’azione. Le relazioni fra questi due aspetti vengono indagati attraverso l’analisi di quattro ambiti ad essi pertinenti: le rappresentazioni e i discorsi sulla “world music” da parte di operatori del settore e intermediari culturali; le logiche economiche che orientano la circolazione globale e le riappropriazioni locali della creatività ascritta al genere “world music”; le attività dei musicisti nei particolari contesti in cui emergono alcune forme di “world music”; le esperienze di consumo di musiche provenienti o influenzate da diverse culture.
