On-site session, held at the Annual Gathering of the Entity of Decolonization (Borgo Rizza, 6 May 2024), examined the entangled histories and material evidence of the fascist rural village in the province of Siracusa. It built on critiques of the Western art value system's reliance on authenticity, provenance and artist intentionality in preservation, and showed how these frameworks are upheld by socio-political and technical infrastructures. Through the material layers, it exposed the labour and ecological implications of materials and the contradictions in preservation logics. It proposed shifting the focus of preservation from value accumulation to practices of care that recognise the agency of materials and local knowledge.
