The volume is the result of an initiative promoted by the Italian Embassy in Mexico, aimed at enhancing scientific relations between Mexican and Italian scholars in different fields of knowledge, on the occasion of the celebrations organized in 2021 by the Mexican government to mark the anniversaries of the founding of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City, 1521) and Mexico's independence (1821). Among the seminars promoted by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in a virtual format due to the pandemic of COVID-19 - concerning anthropology, history, archaeology, restoration and cultural heritage protection - the first one focused on ethnological and historical studies on the indigenous component of the Mexican population and featured dialogues between Italian and Mexican historians and anthropologists, who presented the outcomes of their research on topics such as the cultural heritage of native communities, health management, forms of expression (such as music and dance), and relations with the Catholic church and Protestant churches. The quality of the papers prompted the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia to publish a wide selection of the papers presented.
