Harmonising national trademark laws is a common objective in market economies, typically addressed through international treaties such as the Paris Convention or the TRIPS Agreement. In the European Union, however, a distinct and more far-reaching approach was pursued. Aimed at eliminating the legal obstacles to the creation of the common market, EU trademark harmonisation developed through multiple complementary mechanisms. These included the adoption of the first and second Trademark Harmonisation Directives, the establishment of the unitary Community trademark system, and the central interpretative role played by the Court of Justice. Taken together, these measures produced a high degree of legal convergence and are widely regarded as one of the most successful and comprehensive harmonisation efforts in EU law.
