The essay examines the debate on ancient triremes held at the Royal Academy of Christina of Sweden in February 1675, in the light of the contemporary reinterpretation of the frieze of Trajan’s Column in Rome. In particular, it analyzes in detail the oration delivered by the mathematician Giovanni Alfonso Borelli, as an affirmation of the role of practical mathematics as a criterion for resolving antiquarian disputes based on textual and visual sources. This statement is considered in relation to contemporary academic debates on the same subject.
