Giovanni Montiroli. Gli anni della formazione a Roma tra le scuole accademiche e lo studio di Luigi Canina

Giovanni Montiroli: The formative years in Rome, between academic schooling and the studio of Luigi Canina Giovanni Montiroli’s long and complex training period is analyzed in light of new documents and the three tables of essays on Theoretical Architecture drawn between 1833 and 1836 under the guidance of Gaspare Salvi. Significant contributions to his technical and cultural growth also emerge from the exercises carried out in the courses of Giulio Camporese (Elementary Architecture and Ornamentation), Giuseppe Valadier (Practical Architecture), Pietro Delicati (Geometry, Perspective, and Optics) and Salvatore Betti (Mythology, History, and Customs). In the second half of the 1830s, at the end of studies at academic schools, Montiroli first ventured into publishing the Prospetto geometrico delle fabbriche di Roma elevato nell’anno 1835 and then began collaborating with Gaspare Salvi on the Gregorian-Etruscan Museum project, also contributing to the drafting of the catalog. During the same period, he began a fundamental and lasting collaboration with Luigi Canina, both in design and, above all, in graphics, becoming the key figure in the master’s atelier from the 1840s onwards, working full-time on surveys, drawings, and engravings intended to illustrate the dozens of volumes published by the Piedmontese architect.
