This volume approaches classical music not simply as a heritage to be preserved, but as a living practice that is continually renewed through performance. The essays explore the performative dimension as a privileged site of tension between past and present, memory and creation. They reconnect composition and improvisation, outlining a view of classical music as an open and historically situated practice. The agency of musicians is at the heart of the volume: their capacity to transform tradition into shared experience, to redefine the relationship between text, gesture, and listening, and to show how the “classics” continue to exist through the unstable temporality of performance. The contributions address a wide range of areas — from nineteenth-century improvisatory practice and vocal traditions to orchestral conducting and new forms of contemporary mediality — and consider music as a phenomenon of plural temporality, in which different and not always reconcilable ways of relating to the past coexist. From this perspective, performance emerges not only as a vehicle for the repertoire, but also as a form of knowledge and historical reflection: a space in which the work is continually actualized, reactivated, and opened to new possibilities of meaning.

Abstract
From this perspective, performance emerges not only as a vehicle for the repertoire, but also as a form of knowledge and historical reflection: a space in which the work is continually actualized, reactivated, and opened to new possibilities of meaning.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
