Il focolare come dispositivo spaziale. Una riflessione sulle case mediterranee

The hearth constitutes an element of particular significance within domestic architecture. Defined by Gottfried Semper as one of the four fundamental elements in the definition of architecture – together with the roof, the enclosure and the mound – it represents a component that occurs in various forms both in vernacular and historical architecture and in modern and authorial architecture. In addition to serving the functional purposes of heat production and food preparation, the hearth-fireplace represents the symbolic centre of gathering within the domestic space: an element that has evolved technologically alongside building techniques while retaining its dual meaning over time. This contribution specifically investigates the hearth as a formal device which, although now less frequently present as a physical entity or no longer central in terms of its placement, sometimes persists as a generative spatial concept or as an architectural element that articulates the geometric distribution of domestic space, assuming the function of a fulcrum, a point of articulation, or a device for establishing axes and directions. Whether freestanding and conceived in the round, attached to an internal or external wall, or replaced by another object that nevertheless retains its symbolic significance, the study therefore aims to investigate, through the analysis of selected examples of contemporary Italian domestic architecture, the role of the hearth in its different forms and values within the composition of interior space. Furthermore, the essay proposes a reflection on contemporary dwelling culture, relating the theme – both in terms of its use within architectural design and of the presence or absence of the element within the house – to the transformations that, more than ever in recent years, changes in lifestyles have brought about in domestic architecture, as well as in the functions and dimensions of its spaces.

Il focolare costituisce un elemento di particolare rilievo all’interno dell’architettura domestica. Definito da Gottfried Semper uno dei quattro elementi fondamentali per la definizione di un’architettura – assieme al tetto, al recinto e al basamento – esso rappresenta una componente presente in diverse forme sia nell’architettura vernacolare e del passato, sia in quella moderna e d’autore. Oltre che funzionale alla produzione di calore e alla cottura dei cibi, il focolare-camino rappresenta il centro simbolico di raccoglimento dello spazio domestico, un elemento che si è tecnologicamente evoluto di pari passo alla tecnica del costruire ma che ha mantenuto nel tempo la sua doppia accezione. Il contributo si occupa nello specifico di indagare il tema del focolare quale dispositivo formale che, seppure oramai meno presente come entità fisica o anche non più centrale nella sua disposizione, talvolta permane quale concetto spaziale generatore o quale elemento architettonico che articola la distribuzione geometrica dello spazio domestico, assumendo la funzione di fulcro, di snodo o per determinare assialità e direzioni. Isolato e a tutto tondo, addossato a una parete interna o esterna, oppure ancora sostituito da un altro oggetto che tuttavia ne mantiene l’aspetto simbolico, si intende pertanto indagare, attraverso l’analisi di alcune architetture domestiche italiane del contemporaneo, il ruolo del focolare nelle sue diverse forme e valori nella composizione dello spazio interno. Altresì, il saggio propone una riflessione sulla cultura dell’abitare odierna, ponendo in relazione il tema, in funzione dell’utilizzo all’interno del progetto allo stesso modo della presenza o meno dell’elemento all’interno della casa, con i mutamenti che, più che mai negli ultimi anni, la variazione degli stili di vita ha operato sull’architettura della casa, come pure sulle funzioni e sulle dimensioni dei suoi ambienti.
