Contemporary ecological, technological, and cultural transformations are redefining the relationship between design and matter, challenging the conventional understanding of materials as passive substrates for form. This contribution presents the research developed within the MaterialdesignLab at Sapienza University of Rome, framing matter as a relational and performative system that actively participates in design processes. Through a selection of experimental projects, the text outlines three interconnected research trajectories: the exploration of living matter as a co-actor in design; the understanding of material experience as an embodied and situated form of knowledge; and the recognition of making as an epistemological practice through which knowledge emerges from direct experimentation. Projects involving bioreceptive ceramics, bacterial dyes, root systems, auxetic structures, bio-based materials, and experimental fabrication processes illustrate how physical, biological, digital, and cultural dimensions can converge within material-driven design practices. From this perspective, designing “across matter” means moving beyond the object to engage with the ecological, technological, social, and symbolic networks in which every material choice is embedded. The contribution ultimately proposes material experimentation as a method, a pedagogical practice, and a design vision capable of fostering more relational, responsible, and post-anthropocentric approaches to contemporary design.
Le contemporanee trasformazioni ecologiche, tecnologiche e culturali stanno ridefinendo il rapporto tra design e materia, mettendo in discussione la concezione convenzionale dei materiali come substrati passivi della forma. Il contributo presenta le ricerche sviluppate all’interno del MaterialdesignLab di Sapienza Università di Roma, interpretando la materia come un sistema relazionale e performativo capace di partecipare attivamente ai processi progettuali. Attraverso una selezione di progetti sperimentali, il testo individua tre traiettorie di ricerca interconnesse: l’esplorazione della materia vivente come co-attore del progetto; la comprensione dell’esperienza materiale come forma di conoscenza incarnata e situata; e il riconoscimento del fare come pratica epistemologica, attraverso cui la conoscenza emerge dalla sperimentazione diretta. Progetti che coinvolgono ceramiche biorecettive, tinture batteriche, sistemi radicali, strutture auxetiche, biomateriali e processi di fabbricazione sperimentale mostrano come dimensioni fisiche, biologiche, digitali e culturali possano convergere all’interno di pratiche di material-driven design. In questa prospettiva, progettare “across matter” significa andare oltre la dimensione dell’oggetto per confrontarsi con le reti ecologiche, tecnologiche, sociali e simboliche nelle quali ogni scelta materiale è inserita. Il contributo propone infine la sperimentazione materiale come metodo, pratica didattica e visione progettuale capace di favorire approcci al design contemporaneo più relazionali, responsabili e post-antropocentrici.
