This contribution provides a concise overview of the diffusion and fields of use of the so-called ḥurūfu ’z-zimām (literally “letters of the register”), as well as of the history of scholarship devoted to them. This term denotes the Greek numeral signs that survived in the scribal practices of the Arabic-speaking world down to the modern period.
