This article examines the evolving relationship between memory, place, and the Christian tradition surrounding Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Early Christian texts reveal how locations like Golgotha and the Holy Sepulchre became central to the collective memory of Jesus’ followers. Traditions tied to these, and other locations associated with Jesus’ life reflect the human inclination to spatialise historical and religious narratives. Accounts of early pilgrims and graffiti suggest these sites functioned as lieux de mémoire well before Constantine’s era. The study underscores how sacred spaces were continuously reinterpreted to preserve and reinforce theological and communal identity in early Christianity.

Abstract
This article examines the evolving relationship between memory, place, and the Christian tradition surrounding Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Early Christian texts reveal how locations like Golgotha and the Holy Sepulchre became central to the collective memory of Jesus’ followers. Traditions tied to these, and other locations associated with Jesus’ life reflect the human inclination to spatialise historical and religious narratives. Accounts of early pilgrims and graffiti suggest these sites functioned as lieux de mémoire well before Constantine’s era. The study underscores how sacred spaces were continuously reinterpreted to preserve and reinforce theological and communal identity in early Christianity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
