The interventions carried out in the 14th century on the early Christian and medieval Roman churches progressively transformed their nature, moving from an approach still oriented towards the preservation of existing structures to an increasingly pronounced interest in figurative innovation. Amongst the 15th-century interventions, it is possible to identify some notable architectural and constructive features, regarding the masonry construction techniques, the involucration (or replacement) of columns between the naves, the reconfiguration of the access spaces and windows, the construction of vaulted roofs in the side naves and with wooden false ceilings in the central ones. Some of these solutions highlight the progressive consolidation of a new relationship with the ancient: more engineering and presumably conveyed by the building site culture in the Middle Ages, more architectural and expressive of an intellectual and design matrix in the early Renaissance.
