Discussing uncertainty in the contemporary era may appear cliché in light of the crises looming across the broader international horizon. However, there exists an uncertainty regarding the future of Italy—rooted in its international standing—that also possesses an endogenous origin: it stems from the outcomes brought about by the ruling classes that have governed the country for over three decades. This uncertainty now encompasses Italy's position within the global framework, as well as its institutional landscape, which has experienced profound discontinuities in electoral legislation, constitutional reforms, and even the unprecedented re-election of Presidents of the Republic. Furthermore, within the domains of labor, healthcare, the economy, and fiscal policy, the prevailing atmosphere remains one of persistent instability. Understanding how this perception materialized within the nation is central to these pages, which attempt to reconstruct the recent decades of the Republic through diverse analytical perspectives and various fields of observation. Many of the subsequent transformations have yielded outcomes far removed from an orderly transition away from the "Republic of Parties" that drafted the Constitution. Instead, this transition has become excessively protracted, ultimately devolving into structural uncertainty.
