This paper looks at the survey of the Club Canottieri italiano in Buenos Aires as a comprehensive knowledge-building process, grounded in the interplay of different data acquisition methods. This approach makes it possible to develop a layered understanding that brings together geometric, material, and perceptual data, moving beyond their traditional separation. The case study also serves as a teaching tool, offering a testing ground over time for methods and techniques, assessing their effectiveness, and adapting them to evolving workflows, even when set against the contrasting Italian and Argentine contexts, with their differing practices and potential crossovers. Within this framework, “proto-BIM” reflections show how complex data can be structured, processed, and interpreted to map relationships between elements, meanings, and functions. The result is a representation of architecture that goes beyond geometry, becoming a critical and semantic tool aimed at deeper understanding and informed management of the building.
