Cesare Brandi’s theory and France immediately found common ground, also mediated by the ICR, which shortly after the Institute’s foundation led to the activation of not only an exchange of people but also of paintings being sent from the Louvre to be restored in Rome. Despite this, only a few of Brandi’s writings have been translated into French. Only the Theory of Restoration was published and has been widely available since 2001, but it is mainly considered a text on pictorial restoration. Some recent French restorations seem to refer more to the theories of Viollet-le-Duc and the documentary knowledge of the missing elements seems to confer ‘legitimacy’ to the reconstruction. The main distance between Brandi’s theory and current French thought on architectural restoration is the value of the ‘material’ as defined by Brandi, and this creates difficulties in establishing a dialogue between the two countries.

Abstract
The main distance between Brandi’s theory and current French thought on architectural restoration is the value of the ‘material’ as defined by Brandi, and this creates difficulties in establishing a dialogue between the two countries.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
