Grigorios Abu al-Farağ Bar ʿEbroyo

Gregory Abū l-Faraj Bar ʿEbroyo, a major Syriac Orthodox scholar, theologian, physician, and historian of the thirteenth-century produced an enormous encyclopedic body of work covering theology, philosophy, science, ethics, law, poetry, and history. Drawing on Syriac, Arabic, Persian, and East Syrian sources, Bar ʿEbroyo sought to preserve and organize knowledge for a Christian community living under Mongol rule and changing political conditions.His most important historical work, the Chronicle, combines civil and ecclesiastical history. Although much of his account of the Crusades was adapted from earlier Syriac and Islamic historians such as Michael the Great and Ibn al-Athīr, Bar ʿEbroyo reshaped these materials into a concise, accessible narrative focused on moral lessons and the history of the Christian East.
