The studies collected here concern research and analyses conducted in the Tivoli-Subiaco area, defined by the Empiglione and Giovenzano valley systems and the Subiaco Valley. From a morphological perspective, the territory is quite heterogeneous in terms of its conformation and geological composition. The highly significant naturalistic contexts that distinguish it and become distinctive elements of the landscape, the presence of traces of millennia of history, the constant connection with the sacred (first pagan and then Christian), the processes of anthropization and territorial transformations, are among the themes of the research conducted. The study paths, developed with different historiographical orientations, share an analytical methodology based on direct comparison with documentary sources (in the broadest sense of the term), archaeological, architectural, territorial, and landscape 'texts'. This relationship, conducted directly with the object of study, also takes into account the traces left by lived experience (in situ and/or through firsthand readings), fostering a more accurate historical understanding and interpretation; this particularity is expressed in the subtitle of this volume: Commentary. Furthermore, the evident interdisciplinary nature of the research has triggered interesting and fruitful discussions among the various figures involved in the study of the Tivoli-Subiaco area, thus fostering a constructive dialogue. The resulting investigative paths are, in fact, the original outcome of these cultural exchanges, which have led, in terms of knowledge, to new acquisitions for a critical reinterpretation of the transformation processes of the area under study. This significant information must be considered in the development of protection, conservation, and enhancement programs, for a "conscious" enjoyment of the sites.
