Landscapes of the Sacred in the Empiglione, Giovenzano, and Aniene Valleys. Between Nature and Architecture

The study of the “sacred” routes in the Aniene Valley and in those of the Giovenzano and Empiglione offers an opportunity to explore a landscape and artistic context of great allure and deep historical resonance, through a dynamic interplay of history, architecture, and nature. This area—from Rome to Tivoli and across the Middle Aniene Valley—was also the subject of observation, admiration, and description during the journeys of the Grand Tour, in their seventeenth- and eighteenth-century romantic reinterpretation and later in the nineteenth century, as models of spirituality and of both religious and ethical traditions of the past
