The essay explores some of the many procedures in which the performing arts are made visible and usable, also analyzing the purposes of the individual devices used such as conservation, archive, memory, promotion, interaction, information, enhancement. Starting from language itself, i.e. from words, metaphors, narrative structures that apply the performative making it an implicit vehicle, the essay focuses on some case studies. Examples of temporary exhibitions, films and documentaries, urban cultural itineraries, podcasts, reenactements and in more depth examples of websites are analyzed. The fluidity of the purpose, rather than the specificity, distinguishes the structure of the devices that illustrate the performing arts, in tune with the testimonies and traces of its materials. Documents of the performing arts, by definition fragile and rhizomatic, need an authentic understanding of their nature in order to be adequately visible. They need to be understood as part of the intangible cultural heritage.
