Emergency architecture and contexts. Living, working, learning in the transitional city of reconstruction

How can we live, work, learn in cities shattered by disaster without turning temporary housing into a permanent limbo? This book proposes an integrated emergency strategy at territorial, urban and architectural scales, from where to build to how to shape settlements and expandable, customisable units. Based on a Sapienza research project at Department of Architecture and Design, using Accumoli as case study, it offers a multidisciplinary toolkit so that what we call “urban crutches” – temporary settlements for postdisaster life – can be conceived from the outset as parts of the landscape, to be integrated or reused once the emergency is over.
