The catalogue entry illustrates the chapel of Sambuci castle dedicated to San Michele. Starting in 1645 (as suggested by the date painted in a corner of the noble hall), Canini began to fresco the reception rooms of the Sambuci palace and also the chapel. This series of frescoes was resumed with greater vigour between 1662 and 1663 by Cardinal Astalli himself, who had been readmitted to court by the new Pope Alexander VII, for the creation of the ceiling in the church of San Pietro.
