Le cave nel territorio di Cori

The text reconstructs the quarrying landscape associated with the city of Cori, an ancient settlement located on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains. Its quarries have been active since antiquity, mainly extracting limestone, tuff, and pozzolana. Only from the eighteenth century onward—apart from a few earlier occurrences—were various types of breccia, characterized by different colors, quarried there. Their discovery coincided with the reclamation works of the Pontine plain below, promoted by Pope Pius VI. After their discovery, these new breccias were quickly marketed in Rome and used in the most important construction sites of the period

Il testo ricostruisce il panorama estrattivo relativo alla città di Cori, un antico centro situato alle pendici dei Monti Lepini. Le sue cave sono state attive sin dall'antichità. Vi si estraevano principalmente calcare, tufo e pozzolana. Solo dal Settecento, con rari fenomeni precedenti, vi si estrassero diversi tipi di brecce, dalle varie colorazioni. La scoperta avvenne in concomitanza con le operazioni di Bonifica della pianura Pontina sottostante, voluta da Pio VI. Le nuove brecce, dopo la loro scoperta, furono prontamente commercializzate a Roma e impiegate nei più importanti cantieri del tempo.
