The Aniene Valley, between Tivoli and the Sabine and Lucretili ranges, can be understood as a territorial system shaped by the interaction between morphology, watercourses, and human settlement. To the west, human-shaped hills crossed by the river prevail, long serving as both an agricultural resource and a connective infrastructure; to the east, the orography becomes harsher, with carbonate uplands, karst phenomena, and mountainous landscapes that historically favored defense, isolation, and control of transit routes. From the pre-Roman age to Romanization with the Via Tiburtina Valeria, and later the medieval phase of fortified villages and Benedictine monasticism, the territory reveals a deep interweaving of nature, spirituality, and urban formation, which forms the basis of its historical and cultural identity.
