The Aniene Valley, between Tivoli and the Sabine and Lucretili ranges, can be understood as a territorial system shaped by the interaction between morphology, watercourses, and human settlement. To the west, human-shaped hills crossed by the river prevail, long serving as both an agricultural resource and a connective infrastructure; to the east, the orography becomes harsher, with carbonate uplands, karst phenomena, and mountainous landscapes that historically favored defense, isolation, and control of transit routes. From the pre-Roman age to Romanization with the Via Tiburtina Valeria, and later the medieval phase of fortified villages and Benedictine monasticism, the territory reveals a deep interweaving of nature, spirituality, and urban formation, which forms the basis of its historical and cultural identity.

Abstract
The Aniene Valley, between Tivoli and the Sabine and Lucretili ranges, can be understood as a territorial system shaped by the interaction between morphology, watercourses, and human settlement. To the west, human-shaped hills crossed by the river prevail, long serving as both an agricultural resource and a connective infrastructure; to the east, the orography becomes harsher, with carbonate uplands, karst phenomena, and mountainous landscapes that historically favored defense, isolation, and control of transit routes. From the pre-Roman age to Romanization with the Via Tiburtina Valeria, and later the medieval phase of fortified villages and Benedictine monasticism, the territory reveals a deep interweaving of nature, spirituality, and urban formation, which forms the basis of its historical and cultural identity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
