This paper focuses on the multidimensionality of night and the chiaroscuro technique evident in Hoffmann’s Nachtstücke and borrowed from painting as well as from philosophy and natural sciences. Through a skillful fantastic narrative mode and the dialectical contrast between the stories, the author aims to show the ambivalence of magnetism by focussing on its ‚victims‘, thus literary paving the way for Freud’s psychoanalysis.
