The contribution analyzes Auguste Hauschner’s novel Die Siedlung (1918) observing the high symbolic component of space depiction in the work. This symbolism is considered especially interesting in light of Hauschner’s usual realistic poetics and is interpreted in the article as the manifestation of a new approach in the author’s production. A clear connection between the development of this new approach and the experience of WWI is highlighted, as well as the similarities between Hauschner’s traces of apocalypticism and the spatial poetics of other symbolic novels of the same years, works which also use the same descriptive techniques to express a reaction to the violence of the war.
