This work aims at reviewing the genesis and evolution of the provisions of the Defense Production Act of 1950, a United States statute granting the President of the United States a wide array of powers to intervene in the economy to support the domestic industrial base, control inflation and safeguard national defense capabilities, increasingly invoked to address an ever-growing number of crises, from COVID-19 spread to Energy Transition, and to do so by highlighting different aspects of the law whose perceived criticalities may lead to question its compatibility with the U.S. constitutional frame.
