This article presents a concise synthesis of the main themes explored in a broader monographic study devoted to the archaeology of Central Asia from the Protohistoric period to the Arab conquest. The region under consideration extends from the Caspian Sea to the eastern margins of the Tarim Basin and is conventionally divided into Western and Eastern Central Asia by the Tian Shan–Pamir system. The discussion integrates evidence from the former Soviet republics of Central Asia and northern Afghanistan with data from southern Xinjiang, highlighting both regional diversity and long-term cultural connections. The article outlines the principal developments of the Bronze and Iron Ages in Western Central Asia, culminating in the Achaemenid period, which conventionally marks the region’s entry into the historical record. Particular attention is given to the impact of Greek rule in Bactria, the transformations induced by migratory movements between the late Hellenistic and early imperial periods, and the formation of new political and cultural configurations under the Kushan dynasty. The complex centuries between the 3rd and 5th centuries CE are briefly addressed, emphasizing the interpretative challenges posed by the archaeological record. A thematic section is devoted to the spread of Buddhism between the 2nd and 8th centuries CE, considered as a coherent phenomenon expressed through shared architectural and artistic forms across vast territories. The final part of the article shifts to Eastern Central Asia, summarizing recent advances in the archaeology of the Tarim Basin and situating local developments within wider transregional networks. By offering a diachronic and comparative overview, this article aims to provide readers with an accessible yet critical framework for understanding the archaeological history of Central Asia and its role as a crossroads of cultures in Eurasia.
