Three treatises were originally attributed to Iulius Rufinianus, a rhetorician of whom we have very little information, and that too of questionable reliability: the De figuris sententiarum et elocutionis, the De schematis lexeos, and the De schematis dianoeas. Ruhnken 1768, 227, in a footnote on the second of these treatises, cast doubt on the authorship of the latter two. Setting aside issues of attribution related to the works in their entirety, this study will focus instead on the identification of two literary quotations found respectively in the first two texts.

Abstract

Three treatises were originally attributed to Iulius Rufinianus, a rhetorician of whom we have very little information, and that too of questionable reliability: the De figuris sententiarum et elocutionis, the De schematis lexeos, and the De schematis dianoeas. Ruhnken 1768, 227, in a footnote on the second of these treatises, cast doubt on the authorship of the latter two. Setting aside issues of attribution related to the works in their entirety, this study will focus instead on the identification of two literary quotations found respectively in the first two texts.
