The paper investigates the garden as a specific spatial device within the city, distinguished from the urban park by its scale, function, and capacity for integration within the consolidated urban fabric. Through a broad historical reconstruction—from classical antiquity to contemporary practice—the analysis focuses on the role of water as a compositional, symbolic, and technical element in shaping open spaces. While contemporary water-management technologies associated with sustainability provide effective tools to address climate-related challenges, they also risk generating solutions that lack figurative and cultural significance. The paper offers a critical reflection on the distinction between environmental design and landscape design, arguing for the recovery of the garden archetype as a device capable of reconciling environmental efficiency, place identity, and the quality of urban public space.

Abstract
The paper investigates the garden as a specific spatial device within the city, distinguished from the urban park by its scale, function, and capacity for integration within the consolidated urban fabric. Through a broad historical reconstruction—from classical antiquity to contemporary practice—the analysis focuses on the role of water as a compositional, symbolic, and technical element in shaping open spaces. While contemporary water-management technologies associated with sustainability provide effective tools to address climate-related challenges, they also risk generating solutions that lack figurative and cultural significance. The paper offers a critical reflection on the distinction between environmental design and landscape design, arguing for the recovery of the garden archetype as a device capable of reconciling environmental efficiency, place identity, and the quality of urban public space.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
