This chapter explores the structural causes behind the current wave of international insecurity and instability, identifying the Indo-Pacific as the central arena of strategic competition between the United States and China. It examines how the redistribution of power challenges the liberal international order and fuels geopolitical rivalries. The chapter analyzes the strategic responses available to dominant powers, particularly Washington, in managing the shifting balance. The Philippines emerge as a key case study of regional realignment. Ultimately, the Indo-Pacific becomes a prism through which the resilience of the global order is tested.
