The South China Sea (SCS) has been a vital maritime space for centuries, connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans and supporting trade, energy, fisheries and digital networks. Today, it mediates approximately one-third of the world's seaborne trade in crude oil and petroleum products and approximately 34% of seaborne LNG (2023), while hosting several of the world's busiest container ports and a dense network of submarine communications cables. Its long-term importance stems from four interconnected roles: corridor (maritime transport), reservoir (hydrocarbons and fish), platform (ports and industrial districts) and conduit (submarine cables). Looking ahead, the SCS will remain central to global value chains and energy flows, albeit with evolving risks from geopolitical contestation, environmental degradation and decarbonisation.
