The chapter aims to analyse the role of security within the constitutional framework, with specific reference to fundamental rights. In order to address this issue, a twofold perspective is adopted. Firstly, the concept of security is examined from a historical-theoretical point of view. Subsequently, an emphasis is placed on the Italian constitutional system. The objective of the study is to delineate the role of security in this context, fulfilling a variety of functions, such as limiting and conditioning the exercise of fundamental rights. In conclusion, the chapter aims to demonstrate that only a constitutionally oriented perspective can help to find an adequate balance between different dimensions of security within the legal system.
