General plan of the complex

The plan was obtained by using the measurements of the leading scholars of the monument – those of Giovanni Battista Giovenale (made in 1891-1893) and Richard Krautheimer, Wolfgang Frankl and Spencer Corbett (published in 1962). These have been checked, supplemented and updated through direct measures and photogrammetric surveys. This work has shown a close correspondence between the datasets, and the differences to be noted today occur essentially in those cases where restoration was subsequently carried out.
