The paper retraces the development of studies on Christianity and Sicilian hagiography beginning with the seminal contribution of Paolo Siniscalco (1987), who highlighted the central role of martyrial testimonies in the earliest phases of the island’s Christian history. In recent decades, research—enriched by the interdisciplinary contributions of archaeology, art history, iconography, and institutional studies—has enabled the reconstruction of a far more articulated picture. The renewal of hagiographic studies has shifted attention from the issue of authenticity to the capacity of textual, iconographic, and cultic rewritings to reflect the cultural and political contexts in which they were produced. The cases of Euplus, Lucy, and Agatha show how living cults generate continual reinterpretations, at times distant from the original historical events yet invaluable for understanding models and sensibilities of different periods. The expansion of their cults, supported by the establishment of places of worship and the dissemination of relics, reveals a dense network of ecclesiastical and political relations beyond Sicily. The text concludes by recalling the existential dimension of devotion, which made these martyrs figures of consolation and spiritual reference for the faithful.

Abstract
The text concludes by recalling the existential dimension of devotion, which made these martyrs figures of consolation and spiritual reference for the faithful.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
