This paper presents structure, functions and potential of NOTAE System, the public interface of the open-access database dedicated to cataloguing, describing and classifying graphic symbols found in pragmatic literature produced between the 4-5th and the 8th century, which is one of the main outputs of the ERC project NOTAE. The first part, focused on informatics and computing, presents the graph of knowledge created for the database and the techniques of image processing applied to the project. The second part outlines the structure of the interface in its three sections (Graphic Symbols, Documents, Persons) and their internal partitions in fields, motivating some choices made. Lastly, the third part of the paper itemises some research lines made possible by using this tool, and presents concrete results already achieved in the hope of encouraging new researches and further insights on the use of graphic symbols and on scribal culture from late antique Mediterranean to early medieval Europe.

Abstract
This paper presents structure, functions and potential of NOTAE System, the public interface of the open-access database dedicated to cataloguing, describing and classifying graphic symbols found in pragmatic literature produced between the 4-5th and the 8th century, which is one of the main outputs of the ERC project NOTAE. The first part, focused on informatics and computing, presents the graph of knowledge created for the database and the techniques of image processing applied to the project. The second part outlines the structure of the interface in its three sections (Graphic Symbols, Documents, Persons) and their internal partitions in fields, motivating some choices made. Lastly, the third part of the paper itemises some research lines made possible by using this tool, and presents concrete results already achieved in the hope of encouraging new researches and further insights on the use of graphic symbols and on scribal culture from late antique Mediterranean to early medieval Europe.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
