The contribution briefly presents an essay analysing Christian graphic symbols drawn by illiterate people – or literate people who for some reasons could no longer write – in the subscriptions to papyrus contracts from the Latin Western documentary tradition of the 6th and 7th centuries, in the context of a renewed interest in palaeographic and textual analysis for the graphic signs and graphic symbols present in late antique and early medieval documentary texts, whether written in Greek or Latin and whether from the Eastern or Western documentary tradition. The contribution anticipates a monographic work, currently in preparation, dedicated to the usage of graphic symbols and shorthand in Italian documentary papyri.

Abstract
The contribution briefly presents an essay analysing Christian graphic symbols drawn by illiterate people – or literate people who for some reasons could no longer write – in the subscriptions to papyrus contracts from the Latin Western documentary tradition of the 6th and 7th centuries, in the context of a renewed interest in palaeographic and textual analysis for the graphic signs and graphic symbols present in late antique and early medieval documentary texts, whether written in Greek or Latin and whether from the Eastern or Western documentary tradition. The contribution anticipates a monographic work, currently in preparation, dedicated to the usage of graphic symbols and shorthand in Italian documentary papyri.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
