This presentation examines grammaticalization across Sinitic varieties and argues for the crucial role of dialectal data in reconstructing the historical development of Chinese grammar. Drawing on recent studies on Wu and Minnan, the talk shows how combining historical and synchronic evidence offers a richer understanding of how grammatical markers evolve. It concludes by identifying current gaps, such as limited comparative work and insufficient historical depth, and proposes future directions that integrate dialectology more systematically into grammaticalization theory.

Abstract

This presentation examines grammaticalization across Sinitic varieties and argues for the crucial role of dialectal data in reconstructing the historical development of Chinese grammar. Drawing on recent studies on Wu and Minnan, the talk shows how combining historical and synchronic evidence offers a richer understanding of how grammatical markers evolve. It concludes by identifying current gaps, such as limited comparative work and insufficient historical depth, and proposes future directions that integrate dialectology more systematically into grammaticalization theory.
