Foundations, besides meaning "foundations", can also be understood as fundamentals: that is, what constitutes the foundation of reality and/or refers to the search for the principles or the ‘ultimate things’ of architectural knowledge. In contemporary times, dominated by the tendency to bow to an alleged primacy of technology — a mere tool of production rather than a disciplinary form of knowledge, and celebrated because it is able to generate profit — raising the question of fundamentals is entirely out of fashion. But since research must fulfill its social role of anticipating the times rather than conforming to what is dominant within them, dedicating this issue of under construction to this term, in addition to representing a work of disciplinary inquiry, also takes on an eminently political meaning.

Foundations oltre a significare "fondazioni" può essere declinato anche come fondamenti: ovvero ciò che costituisce il fondamento della realtà e/o si riferisce alla ricerca dei principi o delle “cose ultime” del sapere architettonico. Nella contemporaneità, dominata dalla tendenza a piegarsi a un ipotetico primato della tecnologia – mero strumento di produzione più che sapere disciplinare, e celebrata perché capace di generare profitto –, porsi la questione dei fondamenti è assolutamente inattuale. Ma poiché la ricerca deve assolvere al proprio compito sociale di precorrere i tempi, più che di conformarsi a ciò che è dominante in questi, dedicare il numero di under construction a questo termine oltre a rappresentare un lavoro di indagine disciplinare, assume anche un significato eminentemente politico.
