In Greece and then in central-southern Italy, the so-called Orientalizing period covers the entire 7th century BC and marks the influence of Egyptian and Near Eastern figurative, stylistic, and ornamental models on the major visual cultures of the Aegean and central-eastern Mediterranean. The Orientalizing archaeological contexts in Cyprus, Crete, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, and Hellas, in the Greek colonies of southern Italy and Etruria, introduce us to a complex system of aesthetic relationships dictated, in large part, by the circulation and adoption of precious artistic objects and particular figurative themes, often imported or copied from the Nile Delta and the coasts of Syria-Palestine. These seals, amulets, cameos, alabasters, ivories, and aegyptiaca from the 7th century BC found on the coasts and islands of the Mediterranean are engraved with images, signs, and symbols such as vacant writings, in the sense of free (vacans-antis), sometimes used for ornamental, decorative, and anachronistic purposes.
In Grecia e poi in Italia centro-meridionale, la cosiddetta Età dell’orientalizzante copre per intero il VII a.C. e segna l’influenza dei modelli figurativi, stilistici e ornamentali egizi e vicino orientali sulle maggiori culture visive dell’Egeo e del Mediterraneo centro-orientale. I contesti archeologici dell’orientalizzante a Cipro, Creta, Malta, in Sicilia, in Sardegna e in Ellade, nelle colonie greche dell’Italia meridionale e in Etruria ci immettono all’interno di un complesso sistema di relazioni estetiche dettate, in larga parte, dalla circolazione e dall’adozione di preziosi oggetti artistici e di particolari temi figurativi, spesso importati o copiati dal delta del Nilo e dalle coste della Siria-Palestina. In questi sigilli, negli amuleti, nei cammei, negli alabastra, negli avori e negli aegyptiaca del VII a.C. rinvenuti sulle coste e nelle isole del Mediterraneo sono incise immagini, segni e simboli come scritture vacanti, nel senso di libere (vacans-antis), talora usate con valore ornamentale, decorativo e anacronistico. .
