This contribution outlines the main circumstances surrounding the introduction of modern psychiatry in Late Qing China. It focuses on the case of the American missionary John Glasgow Kerr (1824–1901) and the pioneering establishment of China’s first lunatic asylum, the John Kerr Refuge for the Insane. The presentation will address the following research questions: What challenges arose in founding this institution? How did linguistic issues influence its development and its reception among the Chinese population?
