L’uso delle preesistenze architettoniche tra conservazione e contraddizioni

The restoration and adaptation to new use of existing architecture has been a hotly debated issue since the 1960s and is still highly topical. The choice of uses to which to adapt the ancient building, while respecting its historical and artistic value, is extremely complex and delicate and must be assessed on a ʻcase by caseʼ basis. In solving the same problem, each pre-existence will have different solutions specific to that individual monument. When designing an intervention on a pre-existence, it is necessary to investigate and compare the different requirements that emerge from the various disciplinary fields, leading to a flexible project and limiting interventions to only those that are actually necessary. Thanks to this, the pre-existence does not undergo operations dictated only by economic reasons, which often privilege utilization over the intrinsic value of architectural work. This article aims to identify some possible compatible and non-compatible uses, with examples.
