In this article, the author analyzes the articulation of the concepts of race, gender, and color in the Italian context. Starting from the analysis of the historical phenomena that played a crucial role in the construction of racial categories in Italy (such as the racialization of the South and colonialism), the article explores the re-proposition of colonial stereotypes in contemporary media narratives. The last section focuses on the practices of self-narration of three Italian women writers of African descent, who use social media as a tool to build spaces of visibility and empowerment for subjectivities traditionally excluded from mainstream representations.
