Comporre il territorio. Il progetto di architettura per la grande scala

In an era of profound transformations, addressing issues concerning the large scale raises decisive questions for contemporary culture. Today, the territory presents itself as an extremely complex system, dense with elements, history and contradictions; moreover, it constitutes an exhaustible resource as well as the irreplaceable heritage of humankind, reason why it must be protected and preserved, yet also modified, in order to ensure its persistence, its present use and its future operability. For this reason, the book investigates the theme from a eminently design-oriented perspective, focusing on the concepts of form and space while acknowledging the multidisciplinary nature that characterizes the territorial dimension. Starting from a selection of Italian architectural experiences, a series of compositional operations is identified with the aim of analyzing the ways in which design is capable of actively producing transformations within real space, pursuing an aesthetic elaboration jointly a semantic re-attribution. In other words, the book explores the ways in which architecture, by intervening in the syntactic structure of space through principles of form, can develop strategies of transformation that encompass the existing and all the physical and immaterial aspects connected to it.

In un’epoca di grandi mutazioni, affrontare le tematiche che riguardano la grande scala solleva questioni decisive per la cultura contemporanea. Il territorio si presenta oggi come un sistema estremamente complesso, denso di elementi, storia e contraddizioni; esso, per di più, costituisce una risorsa esauribile oltre che il patrimonio insostituibile dell’umanità, motivo per cui va tutelato e preservato ma anche modificato, al fine di garantirne la persistenza, l’utilizzo presente e l’operabilità futura. Per tale ragione il libro indaga il tema da una prospettiva eminentemente progettuale, soffermandosi sui concetti di forma e di spazio pur riconoscendo il carattere multidisciplinare che investe la dimensione territoriale. A partire da una selezione di esperienze architettoniche italiane, viene individuata una serie di operazioni proprie del comporre con l’obiettivo di analizzare i modi attraverso cui il progetto è capace di produrre attivamente trasformazioni sullo spazio reale, tentandone un’elaborazione estetica congiuntamente a una re-attribuzione semantica. Vengono in altre parole esplorate le modalità con cui, intervenendo sulla struttura sintattica dello spazio con principi di forma, l’architettura può elaborare strategie di sviluppo che comprendono l’esistente e tutti gli aspetti fisici e immateriali ad esso connessi.
