Musical practices in a minor urban centre like Alzano Lombardo (Bergamo) during the 17th and 18th centuries reveal unexpected vitality and articulation. The 1626 establishment of a choir of priests in the local parish church, reinforced by continuous practice and the creation of valuable liturgical manuscripts, granted constancy to a musical tradition that soon became intertwined with the community of Franciscan friars and their scriptorium. Additionally, by at least the beginning of the 18th century it had become customary to hire supplementary musicians to enhance the solemnity of major religious celebrations, a practice that involved institutions such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo and Cathedral of Milan. These factors provide deeper insights into the role conventual institutions played in transmitting liturgical music and the connections between prominent urban musical institutions and the regions around them.
Lo studio della prassi musicale in un centro minore come Alzano Lombardo (Bergamo) nei secoli XVII e XVIII rivela una vitalità e una ricchezza inaspettate. L’istituzione di una Residenza corale nella locale chiesa parrocchiale, nel 1626, consolidò tramite la pratica ininterrotta e la commissione di preziosi codici liturgico-musicali una regolare tradizione musicale, presto legatasi alla comunità di frati francescani e al suo scriptorium. Inoltre, a partire almeno dall’inizio del Settecento, invalse la consuetudine di ricorrere a maestranze corali e strumentali esterne per solennizzare le celebrazioni più importantidei diversi enti religiosi attivi sul territorio, coinvolgendo istituzioni quali la basilica di S. Maria Maggiore di Bergamo e la cappella del Duomo di Milano. Questi aspetti consentono di approfondire il ruolo delle istituzioni conventuali nella trasmissione del canto liturgico e i rapporti delle grandi cappellanie musicali cittadine con il territorio circostante.
