Tipologie strutturali in metallo nelle strutture di copertura delle costruzioni storiche

The main focus of the paper is to increase the knowledge of the work carried out in Rome with the use of industrial metals in the creation of extensive metal structures for the roofs of some patriarchal basilicas, between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The events, which occurred in the same years, influenced and then profoundly modified the political-administrative structures pre-existing national unity. The industrialization of the Italy had transformed previous economic systems and cultural approaches. In Rome, the advent of industrial metals in construction has had notable but not well known repercussions on both the architectural heritage under construction and on the existing one. In the studied buildings, the structural potential of metal was exploited, updated technical solutions were adopted aimed at optimizing resistant sections and increasing structural safety through modern cast iron, iron and steel structures.
