Sino-Korean vocabulary constitutes a significant portion (up to 70%) of the Korean lexicon, yet its instruction in Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) often relies on rote memorization of individual Chinese characters (Hanja), which is inefficient for vocabulary acquisition. This study investigates a more effective, morpheme-based approach, focusing on Hanja-derived morphemes to enhance vocabulary inferencing and acquisition skills among KFL learners. The research was conducted with 72 intermediate to advanced Italian learners of Korean at Sapienza University of Rome. The methodology involved a structured four-stage process: theoretical training on Sino-Korean word formation, introduction to specific morphemes, practical inferencing activities, and a final test to measure the efficacy of the approach. The results demonstrate that learners were able to successfully infer the meanings of unknown Sino-Korean words, both with and without contextual support, by breaking them down into their constituent morphemes. The study concludes that integrating education on Hanja-derived morphemes into the KFL curriculum provides a systematic framework that fosters deeper morphological understanding and significantly improves learners' ability to acquire and retain new vocabulary. This approach serves as a powerful alternative to traditional Hanja-centric methods.
Il vocabolario sino-coreano costituisce una porzione significativa (fino al 70%) del lessico coreano; tuttavia, il suo insegnamento nel contesto del coreano come Lingua Straniera (KFL) si basa spesso sulla memorizzazione meccanica dei singoli caratteri cinesi (Hanja), un metodo inefficiente per l'acquisizione lessicale. Questo studio analizza un approccio più efficace, basato sui morfemi, che si concentra sui morfemi derivati dagli Hanja per potenziare le capacità di inferenza e acquisizione lessicale negli studenti di KFL. La ricerca è stata condotta su 72 studenti italiani di livello intermedio e avanzato dell'Università La Sapienza di Roma. La metodologia ha previsto un processo strutturato in quattro fasi: formazione teorica sulla composizione delle parole sino-coreane, introduzione a morfemi specifici, attività pratiche di inferenza e un test finale per misurare l'efficacia del metodo. I risultati dimostrano che gli studenti sono stati in grado di dedurre con successo il significato di parole sino-coreane sconosciute, sia con che senza supporto contestuale, scomponendole nei loro morfemi costituenti. Lo studio conclude che integrare l'insegnamento dei morfemi derivati dagli Hanja nel curriculum KFL fornisce un quadro sistematico che promuove una più profonda comprensione morfologica e migliora significativamente la capacità degli studenti di acquisire e ritenere nuovo vocabolario. Tale approccio si pone come una valida alternativa ai metodi tradizionali incentrati sugli Hanja.
