Persone e libertà. Lo spazio democratico del diritto nel pensiero di Stefano Rodotà

This essay explores Stefano Rodotà’s use of the concept of the person as a key to his intellectual and civic project. For Rodotà, the person is central to constitutionalism: it grounds universal rights while opening them to the concreteness of subjectivity, the body, and technological change. Against both formalist restrictions and naturalistic reductions (“we are our genes,” “we are our data”), he insists on the historical, open-ended character of rights, shaped by struggles for inclusion. The Italian Constitution, especially Article 3, becomes for him a dynamic framework linking liberty, equality, dignity, and solidarity. The essay considers his contributions to privacy, digital technologies, and bioethics, showing how the person functions as the site of vulnerability, autonomy, and democratic self-construction.
